Photoshoot!

So we had our photoshoot for our new collection of scarves recently and it was soooo tiring but of course it was also a lot of fun :) We had lovely Sara and Victoria as our models again this time round as the last shoot that they did for us got such rave reviews! 

Monica had to do both the make up and the styling of our models so it was very very hard work indeed. But the end result looks fantastic and we can't wait to reveal it to you guys so do stay tune for the unveiling that should happen sometime in October! 

The make up that was used on our models was proudly sponsored by 'Hey Gorgeous!'. Putting on make up has never been more fun with their range of sexy black lacquered brushes lined with sparkling Swarovski crystals. As ladies, we all like our bit of glamour & glam :)

Singapore Celebrates!

9th of August 2010 marks the day that Singapore turned 45!

Since Freja Designs Studio has been here for almost 4 years, it's almost like home to us. So, Happy Birthday, Singapore! We hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend and the amazing fireworks display! We were lucky enough to catch the rehearsal fireworks from a gorgeous viewpoint at 1-Altitude.

While we love Scandinavia and it's glorious nature, the city skyline of Singapore holds a special place in our hearts too :) So from all of us here at Freja Designs Studio, we wish everyone a Happy National Day!

Silk - The Queen of Textiles

Ever wondered where does the most beautiful fibers of textile originate from? Acclaimed as the Queen of all textiles, Silk has always been linked to the finest and most luxurious. Today, we thought it might be interesting to share a little about the production that goes on behind the creation of the material that makes our exclusive silk scarves.

As most of you know, silk comes from the cocoon of the silk worm and requires a great deal of careful handling and processing. This precision is what makes it one of the most expensive fibers.

The culture of silkworms is called sericulture. A species known as the Bombyx mori (of Asian origin) is usually cultivated (for the fine quality of silk that it produces) and raised under a controlled condition of environment and nutrition. There are 4 stages in the life cycle of a silk worm. The egg, the silkworm, the pupa and lastly the moth.

The silkworm which feeds on mulberry leaves forms a covering around it by secreting a protein like substance through its head. This stage is called cocoon, the desirable stage for the silk producers. These cocoons are then delivered to the factory, called a filature, where the silk is unwound from the cocoons and collected into skeins (A tedious process that consists of sorting, softening, reeling and bailing, of which we shall not bore you with.)

An interesting fact to note, did you know that one ounce of silkworm eggs contains 40,000 eggs (1,500 eggs per gram).  These worms will eat 3,500 pounds (1500 kilograms) of mulberry leaves, and will spin cocoons which will produce 18 pounds (8 kilograms) of silk thread. It takes 1700 to 2000 cocoons to make one silk dress (or about 1,000 cocoons for a silk shirt).

Considering alll that work, now you know why you pay a premium for our silk collection ;)

But there you have it, a brief look into how these amazing little cocoons can form the softest and finest threads that we wear :)

Scandinavian Inspirations

Monica and Steve traveled to Skåne, Sweden over summer and came back with the most amazing pictures. Today, we give you a glimpse of where Freja Designs get her inspirations from:

Quite stunning pictures huh? For those that have never been to Sweden, it is a country with very beautiful landscapes (especially during the Summer). Anyone who loves the nature will fall in love with Scandinavia. Monica has come back from this trip with a whole lot of fresh and new ideas so do stay tune and we promise you will be blown away :)

Silk Scarves Collection

Glad Midsommar!

Midsommar or Midsummer, is one of the most important days in the Swedish calendar! This is because in Sweden, it marks the beginning and the start of the brief but glorious summer season, a time for leisure, a time for long romantic walks on endless light evenings (the sun can set as late at 11pm and rise again at 4am!).

On this day, all self-respecting ;) swedes take time off work and families fan out into the surrounding forests to collect flowers to make wreaths. These are then hung upon the maypole, which will form the centrepiece of the day’s (and night’s!) celebrations. Ring dances are performed around the maypole to the accompaniment of screams of delight from the children and peels of laughter from the adults.

" As the afternoon wears on and the dancers tire, it is time to eat and feast! A typical Midsommar menu will include various kinds of pickled herring (flavoured with onion, garlic, tomato, mustard sauce, and a myriad of other varieties), boiled new potatoes with freshly-picked dill, soured cream and red onion. Fish always features strongly in Swedish cuisine, and the next course may well include salmon or perhaps a meat dish such as spare ribs. To follow, the summer’s first crop of strawberries will be proudly brought to the table and eagerly devoured.

Of course, the smörgåsbord would not be complete without the traditional accompaniment of cold beer and schnapps – but once again, singing is very much in evidence. You can’t drink a schnapps without singing!"
